BISD Athletic Hall of Honor Class of 2016 Inductees
The latest class selected for induction into the Boerne ISD Hall of Honor has been announced and there’s definitely a running theme involved. All of the teams are Greyhound cross country teams, while one individual ran cross country and track at BHS and the other coached cross country at BISD.
Selected for induction into the Class of 2016 is the 2003 and 2004 Boerne High School boys cross country teams, along with the 2005 BHS girls cross country team. Two of those teams won gold and the other won silver at state. Also, state champion Courtney Darter Bruce and finally, the most successful coach in Boerne ISD history, Dave Fulkerson, will also be inducted into the hall of honor.
This is the seventh class that will be inducted into the hall of honor and this year's ceremony was held Oct. 21, at The Dominion Country Club.
A look at the class of 2016:
2003, 2004 BHS Boys Cross Country Teams
The 2003 and 2004 4A state champion teams were inducted together since some of the same athletes competed on both teams.
The 2003 boys team made school history by becoming the first team to ever win a state title in Boerne. The 2004 team made history by becoming the first squad to defend a state title the following year. Both were coached by Dave Fulkerson.
The 2003 team scored 33 points to beat the second-place team by 73 points at state that year. The seven who ran at the state meet in 2003 included David Fuentes, Jacob Wells, Joel Benavides, Evan Tingle, Erik Thormaehlen, Ryan Mack and Andrew Cashion, while Taylor Hansen also contributed greatly to the teams success that season.
The 2004 state race was a little closer after the Greyhounds scored 71 points to win gold and edge the second-place team by 12 points. Included on the 2004 team was returners David Fuentes and Joel Benavides from the 03 team, along with David Wilson, Danny Velo, Lorin Wilson, Austin McClain and Chass Armstrong. Fuentes paced the squad with a third-place individual finish that year at state and is still running. Earlier this year, Fuentes competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
2005 BHS Girls Cross Country Team
The 2005 Boerne High girls cross country teams second-place finish at state was historic in its own right since it marked the highest finish by a BHS girls cross country team at state.
Running at the state meet that year for the Lady Hounds included Emily Jones, Anne Blalock, Melissa Jones, Hannah McCord, Robyn Artale, Brooke Martin and Stephanie Dillard. Emily Jones turned in a top-10 finish at state after she came in 8th that year.
The Boerne girls might have won state that year had they been 100 percent healthy, but one of their top runners, Christine Dahlhausen, who had finished in the top 10 at the previous two state meets, missed the race because of an injury.
The 2005 BHS girls team was coached by Erin Bradley and Dave Fulkerson.
Courtney Darter Bruce
Courtney Darter, as she was known before she got married, ran her way into Boerne ISD history by winning the girls 4A 800-meter race in Austin on May 15, 1998, at Royal-Memorial Stadium, the last time the state high school meet was held in the stadium. Darter Bruce had broken her leg her junior year playing basketball and still almost qualified for state that spring after a quick recovery but finished third at regionals after she reinjured her leg. She recovered that summer and during her senior season, Darter Bruce ran cross country for the Lady Hounds, played basketball and then competed in track in the spring.
At regionals that spring, she won the Region IV-4A title with a time of 2:13.75 for the 8th best time in the nation that year according to the May 19, 1998 issue of the Boerne Star. At state, Darter Bruce clocked in with a career-best time of 2.12.78 to capture gold and was only the second Boerne High girl athlete at that point to ever win a state gold medal, with Patsy Baxter being the first. Darter Bruce also medaled at the state meet her sophomore year when she won silver in the 800.
After high school, Darter Bruce ran competitively at Southwest Texas State University for four years and was part of three conference championships while on the track team and was all-conference for two seasons. She ran the 800, mile relay and distance medley relay in college and was part of the cross country team.
Dave Fulkerson is the most successful coach in Boerne ISD history with six state championships (03, 04, 08, 09, 11, 12) and a national title underhis belt (09).
There were a lot of firsts for Fulkerson who is now retired. He led the 2003 and 2004 Boerne High boys cross country teams to state championships and was the first coach at BISD to ever lead a unit to a state team title. The 2004 team was also the first to repeat as state champions. When Boerne Champion opened in 2008, Fulkerson led the boys team to the state title for the first championship in school history. The Chargers repeated in 2009 and that unit was the first to ever repeat at the school.
Also, the 2009 team made more history by winning the Nike Cross Nationals held in Oregon that December to give Fulkerson a national title. Fulkerson again won back-to-back state titles after he led the 2011 and 2012 Champion boys teams to championships at the state cross country meet in the fall.
Fulkerson was the first Boerne ISD coach to win state team titles at both Boerne High and Boerne Champion and actually has seven state titles to his credit. He also won a state championship before coming to Boerne when he was coaching in Hawaii.
Generally, a coach has to wait five years after he leaves BISD in order to be considered for the Hall of Honor but with Fulkerson, who has only been retired one full school year, the BISD Hall of Honor board made an exception since Fulkerson was involved with most of this years inductees and because of his accomplishments.
