BISD Athletic Hall of Honor Class of 2010

The 1958 Boerne High School Boys' Basketball Team

The 1958 Boerne High School boys’ basketball team put Boerne Athletics on the map by capturing a bronze medal at the state tournament that year.  The trailblazing squad was the first in school history to advance to the state tournament and the first to medal. The 1958 squad consisted of Rayford Aycock, Blair Bundy, Billy Canavan, Eugene Canavan, Bill Ehman, Richard Herms, Billy Pechacek, Alvin Rhodes, Travis Stewart, John Wayne Uecker, Chris Wright and John Young.  The team was coached by Vernon Turner and Elton Churchill; and the manager was Tim Torrence.

The team was so loaded with talent that three of the athletes medaled at the state track  meet while in high school and five of them participated in college athletics once they graduated from BHS.

Billy Canavan, Richard Herms and Bill Ehman were all-district first-team selections that season, while Ehman made the all-state team. Eugene Canavan and John Young were all-district second-team picks for Boerne that captured the regional title by chopping down Woodsboro, 67-48.

Once at state, the Hounds lost to James Bowie, but rebounded by winning the bronze medal game over Plans 56-46 in an era when the teams actually played for third place.

Boerne ended the regular season with a 20-5 mark and concluded the year with an impressive 24-6 record to set the standard for future Greyhound teams.

Richard Herms

Richard Herms cemented his place in Boerne athletic history by becoming the first Greyhound to win a gold medal at a state event.  In the spring of 1958, Herms helped the Greyhounds claim the District 103-B title before sprinting to a first-place finish at the state track meet in the 120-yard hurdles with a time of 14.4 seconds. Herms holds the school record in that event and in the 180-yard low hurdles and will have those records forever since those two events have been discontinued.

Herms was also part of the 1958 Greyhound Basketball Team which returned from the state tournament with a bronze medal, making him the first BHS athlete to earn two state medals in one year.

After high school, Richard married Kathy Seiter and raised his family in Boerne. He worked for the Texas Highway Department for 40 years before he and his wife both passed away in 2008.

His two children, Dennis and Tess, and their spouses survive him. His four grandchildren are Eddie and William Loman, and Garret and Brigitte Herms.
